The West Texas desert became the centre of attention Monday morning as six celebrities, including Katy Perry and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sanchez, soared into space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket and capsule for a short flight. The launch took place at 9.30 am ET from Blue Origin’s facility in Van Horn, Texas. During the 10-minute journey, the crew travelled just beyond the Kármán line, 100 kilometres above Earth, which is commonly regarded as the official edge of space.

After the capsule touched down at the end of its journey, Bezos personally opened the hatch for the six women celebrities. Sanchez was the first to step out. In the now-viral video, Bezos greets her with a warm hug and kisses on the cheek. As the video continues, he welcomes each of the remaining five passengers with individual hugs, celebrating their return to earth one by one.

With nearly a million views, the video garnered numerous reactions from Internet users. “This should be super awesome and is just weird. Yet still, congrats to the Blue Origin team. They are the ones that deserve this applause,” a user wrote. “That’s history right there. Congrats to the all-female crew short trip, giant leap,” another user commented.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are reportedly tying the knot this summer in Venice, Italy, nearly two years after their engagement in May 2023. Sanchez was previously married to Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell, with whom she shares two children, Ella and Evan. She also has a 23-year-old son, Nikko, from a previous relationship with former NFL player Tony Gonzalez. Jeff Bezos, meanwhile, was married to MacKenzie Scott from 1993 until their divorce in 2019. The former couple has four children together.

In an official statement reported by Forbes last month, Venice announced that it will host the billionaire couple’s wedding ceremony with 200 guests, ensuring the event takes place without causing any inconvenience to the city, its residents, or visitors.
