As the clock struck midnight to welcome the New Year, Nagaoka, Japan, made history by launching the world’s largest firework.
Renowned for the Nagaoka Festival, which was first held in 1946 as a prayer to heal following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 1, 1945, the Nagaoka Festival is one of the three big fireworks festivals in Japan.
In 2016, renowned fireworks experts had ranked it as the top fireworks event of the year.
This year too, the vibrant burst of colours and intricate patterns painted across the canvas of the night sky reflected the culmination of months of preparation and anticipation.
