The concept of “Atithi devo bhava,” meaning “The guest is God,” lies at the core of Indian hospitality. It simply means that guests are accorded the highest respect, offered the best food, and provided with the finest accommodations. A Russian tourist was recently stunned by the heartwarming hospitality he received from a family in Delhi.
The now-viral video shows the tourist attending a family gathering outside a temple. Looking into the camera, he explains how the family first enquired about his nationality and then warmly invited him to join them for a meal. As the video unfolds, a man hands him an Indian thali meal, consisting of daal, roti, sabzi, and papad. Curiously, the tourist asks, “What is this?” to which the man replies, “Papad.” The Russian then comments, “It is very tasty, guys.”
The video continues, showing one of the men offering candies to the tourist after his meal. The tourist expresses how he was hungry, and how the family offered him amazing hospitality. He also shares his fascination with Hindu culture, discussing temples and how every family has its temple. “Every Indian family has a special mandir, just for family,” he says in the video.
The tourist concludes with a heartfelt message: “Come to India, India will show you real spirituality.”
