A beachfront house worth nearly Rs 3 crore collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean on North Carolina’s Outer Banks on August 16 after the coast was hit by Hurricane Ernesto. In a viral video, the house, built in 1973, at 23214, Corbina Drive in Rodanthe, is seen collapsing in the blink of an eye. The structure is then seen floating as strong waves wash the shore.
Sharing the video, an X user Collin Rugg wrote, “Beachfront home falls into the Atlantic Ocean on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The incident was thanks to Hurricane Ernesto which is off the coast in the Atlantic. The unfortunate owners purchased the 4 bed, 2 bath home in 2018 for $339,000. The home was built in 1973.”

With over 14 million views, the video amassed several reactions. A user wrote, “Seems like a dumb decision to build that house in the first place.” Another user commented, “The Outer Banks used to be forest areas that helped protect the inland areas. This is what happens when you remove the protective barriers.”
“They are called “barrier islands” for a reason. The fact that we build on them is insane. Barrier islands are supposed to ebb and flow and change as storms come by,” a third user reacted.
A local website, The Virginian Pilot, cited the National Park Service as saying that the house at Corbina Drive was the seventh oceanfront house at Cape Hatteras National Seashore to collapse into the Atlantic Ocean in the last four years. It also said it was “one of several damaged by rough ocean conditions in the area”.
