The Aadhaar card, a 12-digit unique identity number that serves as proof of identity and address, has become indispensable in the last few years. Issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Government of India suggests that users update their Aadhaar card every 10 years for revalidation.

With some Aadhaar cards issued more than a decade ago, the government is now urging all cardholders to update their details. As part of the initiative, the Indian government is allowing Aadhaar card holders to update their details for free till September 14.

While the deadline has been extended multiple times, there is no information if UIDAI will further extend it. If you have an Aadhaar card that was created more than 10 years ago and hasn’t been updated since then, here’s how you can avoid the standard fee of Rs 50 and update your card for free.

How to update your Aadhaar card details for free

1. Open your preferred browser and head over to “https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in”

2. On the page that appears, enter your Aadhaar card number and type in the One-time password (OTP) sent to the phone number linked to the card.

3. After logging into the portal, check your existing identity and address details to see if they are still correct.

4. In case you need to update your address or number, choose the documents you want to submit from the drop-down menu and upload the files you want to.

5. Once done, review and submit your update request and you will get a Service Request Number (SRN), which can be used to track the update progress.

Keep in mind that these files need to be less than 2MB in size. Support file formats include JPEG, PNG, and PDF. Also, the online portal can only be used to update their Proof of Identity and Proof of Address.

This means users who want to update other things like biometrics, name, photograph, and mobile number will have to visit their nearest UIDAI authorised centre.
