There are so many Chinese smartphone brands currently in India that,at times,it becomes difficult to differentiate one from the other. Fortunately, within these, there are a few companies that, though still not in the league of Apple Inc. and Samsung group,do have some exciting products in their line-up. Gionee is one such company that now has some good offerings in India. Among its latest ones is the GPad G2,which is actually a dual-SIM phablet that comes with a 5.3-inch screen.
The first thing you will notice about the phone is that it looks very similar to the various other phablets in the market. Gionee has stuck to a tried and tested design. But despite housing a large screen, the G2 is easy to hold, thanks to a slim chrome bezel around the display.
While on the backside you have the rear-camera,flash that can also be used as a torch, and the speakers, the front looks plain with three capacitive touch buttons. The USB port is on the bottom while the headphone slot is at the top. The volume buttons are on the right edge while the power button is on the left edge.
Powered by a 1.2 GHz processor, the GPad G2 comes with a 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Connectivity options include 3G,Wi-Fi,Bluetooth 4.0 and aGPS.
As far as the camera is concerned, the GPad G2 comes with an 8-megapixel rear shooter with auto-focus and LED flash, which is capable of capturing videos at 720p video recording. You also have a 2-megapixel front camera to capture self-images and do video chat. Both the cameras have decent performance. The screen display is also good but,at times, especially under the bright sun, things arent really clear even when the screen is at its brightest best. But I dont fully blame the phone for the same, considering the fact that I tested it under the bright June mid-day sun,and probably most phones will fare the same in such conditions. Under normal conditions, the display has good colour output.
Perhaps the best thing about the GPad G2 is that it comes with a 3,000mAh battery, which really works wonders. In fact, after fully charging the phablet,I could use it extensively for two days and that speaks a lot for any smartphone. Gionee offers a flip cover for the GPad G2,which is quite similar to what Samsung has made popular. But unlike other phones, the cover has to be fitted on top of the back panel, which adds to the weight of the phone.
Now,the best part. Gionee has priced the GPad G2 at R13,990,which is quite competitive.
Although an average machine, what really works for the G2 is its impressive battery life and decent performance.
