The Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet is not heavy and can be slid around easily because of wheels at the bottom. (Nandagopal Rajan / Express photo)
“Dad, what’s this gadget?” My 12-year-old, who has seen his fair share of crazy gadgets, is surprised at the latest contraption I have unboxed at home. “It’s an indoor satellite receiver,” I reply in jest. But it is in fact the Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet air purifier, which looks very different from the vertical loop designs we are used to from the company.
The Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet is true to its name. It is big and it is quiet, despite its size. And it is big for a reason. This is not the regular air purifier you would buy for your small bedroom. This one is meant for those with really large spaces, up to 1076 sq ft, and has been designed keeping that specific use case in mind. And it has also been designed to be quiet, which I think is a significant achievement in this case.
The air purifier comes in a box that is intimidating at first. However, the setup is quite easy as you just need to fit the bowl-like fan component on top to the cylindrical filter part at the bottom. Once connected, you can use the Dyson remote or the smartphone app to power on and control the air purifier. On the app, this one too, appears like other air purifiers, giving you real-time data on the pollution levels inside your home and comparing it with AQI data for your locality. The one difference from other Dyson air purifiers is that with this one, you can adjust the tilt of the fan in three angles between 0 and 50 degrees, with the first level working well if you want to blow clean air within the room and feel it on your face.

I don’t live in a very large house, but most of it is connected and without walls. The space that consists of the living room, dining room, open kitchen, and multiple corridors is large and usually ineffective for smaller air purifiers. While we in Delhi NCR don’t talk much about air pollution these days because the air looks cleaner, the fact is that AQI levels are still way above acceptable levels. Even in mid-December, the AQI levels in Noida rarely come down below 350. In my bedroom, where a smaller air purifier runs almost the entire time, the AQI levels are usually just a shade below 100, except for early mornings when it drops to under 50 as the doors have not been opened for hours.
In the living room, air purifiers have a tougher time as the main door is opened many times a day and we have an open kitchen that contributes in its way to the AQI levels inside. Dyson’s Big+Quiet manages this well and if kept on all the time can keep the air inside the large room well within good levels even with doors opening and dal being tempered in the kitchen. From an AQI level of around 350 it took the air purifier about 90 minutes to bring it down to under 100 for the first time and with one more hour was able to bring it under 50 and keep it there.

If you want to speed up the initial clean up you can change the fan setting to 10 and make it pull in more air. However, when you do this, the air purifier can be heard a bit, whizzing away in the corner of the room. In contrast, when in auto mode, this is almost silent. I used to run it at full speed for the first 30 minutes and then switch to auto to maintain the AQI levels at low. There is also a sleep level. In this mode, you don’t even realise the air purifier is in the room.

Now, this is not a unit you should consider for small spaces. Dyson has more products that are ideal for such needs. This is for large homes with huge open spaces or office floors. And remember, this is a large air purifier that will stick out in a small room like an elephant in a cowshed. Thankfully, the unit is not heavy and can be slid around easily because of wheels at the bottom.
