YouTube, the largest video sharing platform on the internet is experiencing a weird issue that is causing videos to stream in low quality even on fast internet connections.

According to user reports on Reddit, DownDetector and the YouTube Help Page, the issue seems to have surfaced around a week ago and is causing videos and shorts to stream in 144p and 360p resolution even if they manually set it to FullHD (1080p). Also, many have complained that they are experiencing buffering issues if they try to stream in higher quality.

YouTube has issued a statement saying that some users are “experiencing lower than usual video quality when trying to watch Videos and Shorts. Rest assured, we’re actively looking into this! We’ll update this thread with new information as soon as it becomes available.”

Currently, there is no workaround for the problem, so you will have to wait till YouTube fixes it, but you can try heading over to the website and see if videos load normally. Also, it is still unclear how many users are affected by the problem, but it is likely that the issue is widespread.
