X, the popular social media platform owned by Elon Musk is inaccessible for many people in some parts of the world. The problem surfaced at around 1 A.M IST on Friday, May 23, with several users reporting on DownDetector that they were having trouble using the app and navigating the website.
While the number of people reporting the outage has now decreased and everything seems operational, at least in India, the outage still seems to be affecting users in some parts of the world, like the US, Canada, Peru, France, the UK, Malaysia and Germany.
X doesn’t have a status page, but on its developer platform status page, the company says that “some systems are experiencing degraded performance”. The company also said that the social media platform experienced a “Site-wide outage” and that the incident is still ongoing.
Some X users can check their DMs while others see a blank inbox like in the image above. (Express Photo)In India, the majority of X features seem to be working fine, but some users are getting a “Something isn’t right. Please try again later” error message when trying to log in to the app.
As you can see in the image above, a bunch of users are unable to see any of their chats in the DM section and are getting a “Cannot retrieve messages. Please try again later” error, but for others, everything is working as intended.
Following the outage, users who were able to access the platform expressed their displeasure. While some slammed the absence of customer service, some shared memes.
X’s Engineering team recently took to the platform, saying that the problem is caused by a “data center outage” and that the team is actively working to fix it, but did not share a timeline on when everything will be back to normal.
X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today. We are experiencing a data center outage and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.

This is the second outage this year. The micro-blogging site went down for around 30 minutes on March 10, following which several users reported that they were unable to access it via the mobile app and web version. At around 3:15 pm IST, the outage spiked with more than 2,500 reports logged on downdetector.com. In September 2024, the platform was inaccessible for over an hour worldwide.
X has finally resolved the problem causing the outage, but according to the X developer platform, some users may still face issues when trying to log in to their account on both the app and website as well as when using X credentials to authenticate other services.
