195 people were on Thursday awarded Indian Citizenship Certificates at a camp organised by the district administration in Ahmedabad. Out of these, 122 citizenship certificates were given under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and 73 were handed to those registered in the district collector’s office. The certificates were awarded by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
A statement from the government on Thursday quoted Sanghavi as saying, “The sight of 195 people being given citizenship at once is rarely seen in other states of the country. People who have come to India as refugees after enduring torture and suffering for years in many countries have become participants in the development of the country over the years.”
Expressing gratitude to PM Modi and Amit Shah, Sanghavi said, “People of some religions and castes are minorities in Pakistan. The situation of minority citizens in Pakistan has been difficult for years and their security is under threat. After assuming the responsibility of the country, PM Modi has taken a directional step to change the citizenship rules and provide citizenship certificates to citizens who have come to India from Pakistan.”
He added, “The CAA law has proven to be important in helping refugee citizens live a proud life in India and realize their dreams. By obtaining a citizenship certificate, they will be able to easily access various rights and services.”
The Ahmedabad district administration has been issuing citizenship certificates to citizens since 2017.
