Tecno on Friday held the 2023 Future of Imaging Technology Conference in Delhi, unveiling a new imaging experience which it calls “Ultimage.” The technology, which will be featured on the Tecno Camon 20 series first, focuses specifically on sensors and AI processing to cater better to the requirements of portrait photography, anti-shaking functionality, and lowlight shooting.

The company says that Ultimage will be featured on the brand’s premium Phantom and Camon product lines, starting with the Camon 20 series. This series includes three handsets – Camon 20 Premier 5G, Camon 20 Pro 5G, and Camon 20 – all of which are set to hit the market by the end of this month.

Going by the event, Tecno is betting heavily on the Camon 20 series’ camera capabilities, building the entire event around it. The Camon 20 series is definitely a camera-centric phone – one look at the massive camera island around the back and you’d immediately be able to tell so.

The Tecno Camon 20 Premier that was handed over for tryouts had triple camera sensors, with a 50MP primary RGBW sensor, a 108MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP portrait sensor. An ultrawide camera with a higher pixel count than the primary camera is a rare occurrence but is not something we haven’t seen before.

Moving on to “Ultimage,” Tecno boasts that its RGBW Pro Technology replaces the green array solution in the traditional RGGB colour filter with a white one. This, Tecno claims, allows for a much higher light intake. Again, this technology isn’t exactly novel. Oppo, for instance, revealed a camera sensor with a similar pixel arrangement back in 2021.

Tecno also demonstrated its Sensor-shift technology, which it claims can compensate for shakes up to 5,000 times per second. Instead of relying on lens movement to compensate for shaky hands or bumpy rides, Sensor-sift uses the motion of the camera’s sensor itself.

Additionally, Tecno claims that its new Portrait Master Algorithms allows users to nail portraits in the first shot itself, providing a “one shot perfect photo” experience.

And finally, Tecno has announced that it’s among the first smartphone brands that’ll bring the Android 14 upgrade and deliver “a host of privacy, security, performance, and user customization updates.”
