Google rolled out the first public beta for Android 14 in April last month, introducing several new features like predictive back gestures, improved system share sheet, per app language preferences and more.
However, a huge problem that plagues Android devices is ram management. Phone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Realme, and Samsung aggressively kill background apps to conserve battery life, frustrating users and developers.
But things might soon change for good with Google recently announcing in a blog post that Android 14 will reduce restrictions on foreground services and background processes. The tech giant said it is working in partnership with Samsung to make apps more reliable in the background on Samsung Galaxy smartphones with One UI 6.0 based on Android 14.
Samsung said it will not kill background services on Android 14 if the app is developed according to the new Android foreground service API policy. To give you a quick recap, the upcoming Android version makes some major changes to how background apps and services are handled.
This means as long as Android app developers build their apps according to Google’s new policies for Android 14, they won’t have to worry about the app getting killed in the background. If Google manages to get more app developers and phone manufacturers on board, users and developers won’t have to worry about apps behaving differently on phones and tablets from various brands.
