OnePlus is all set to enter the world of foldables on October 19 with the launch of its first folding smartphone — OnePlus Open. Jointly developed by OnePlus and Oppo, the upcoming foldable device is speculated to be one of the best in the market.

From official teasers to leaks, the OnePlus Open is no longer a mystery. Here is everything we know so far about the upcoming foldable by OnePlus.

From OnePlus V Fold to OnePlus Open

According to earlier leaks by OnLeaks, the device was known as the OnePlus V Fold. However, later on, the same has been rebranded as the OnePlus Open. Both names indicate a foldable device. However, the final nomenclature sounds unique, and yet conveys the message that it is a foldable phone that ‘opens’.

OnLeak also suggests that the OnePlus V Fold, currently known as the OnePlus Open will be similar to that of the Oppo Find N2, which has a slightly shorter form factor when compared to devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5. However, official renders suggest otherwise, where the phone has a distinctive design with a massive circular camera island on the back.

New hinge with the iconic alert slider

The company has also confirmed that the OnePlus Open features a lighter yet sturdier hinge system, a water-drop-shaped hinge, that is made out of just 69 components, which consists of several alloys, including titanium and carbon fibre. The hinge also enables the company to achieve a gap-less design. According to a recent report by a YouTuber Mr Mobile, the OnePlus Open is expected to have some sort of ingress protection for water resistance, and the hinge is also said to get a special grease coating to prevent dust from entering into the device.

Another interesting aspect of the OnePlus Open, according to the official teaser, the phone has a plush and premium design, where, a rounded-off glass sits within the rectangular metal frame, which makes it look very artistic when compared to most phones, which feature a square frame and a square glass or a curved frame and a curved glass. Besides, OnePlus has also retained the iconic alert slider on the Open.

As per the official renders, the OnePlus Open is likely to go on sale in two colour options — black and green. However, a new leak from Evan Blass suggests that the company is also working on red and gold variants of the OnePlus Open, which might launch at a later date.

Hardware and Software

OnePlus Open is based on the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Leaks suggest that the phone will offer a whopping 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. Like most OnePlus flagship phones, the device might not offer a microSD card slot and is likely to include two nano SIM card slots.

When it comes to hardware, the phone is reported to include a 6.31-inch cover display and a 7.82-inch primary foldable display. Leaked promotional materials highlight that these displays will be called ProXDR, a nomenclature that we usually associate with Apple devices. On top of that, these displays are said to be capable of offering up to 2,800 nits, making these the brightest displays ever used on a smartphone.

Coming to cameras, the phone is reported to have a triple camera setup with Hasselblad tuning, and this is also said to be the first smartphone to feature a periscope zoom lens with support for 3x optical zoom. On top of that, there will be a selfie camera on the cover display and another one on the inside.

The OnePlus Open will ship with OxygenOS 13 based on Android 13 OS. As the company has already confirmed, the OnePlus Open will ship with select third-party apps like Facebook, which have been specially optimised for the foldable form factor. Lastly, in terms of pricing, leaks suggest that the OnePlus Open might cost upwards of Rs 1,00,000 in India, making it the most expensive OnePlus device. However, it is likely to be more affordable than Samsung’s offering.
