It looks like JioCinema could finally be rolling out an ad-free subscription option. The Indian streaming platform has been teasing “a new plan” on social media with a video hinting that an ad-free is on the way.
“Change is constant, but your plan doesn’t have to be. A new plan. Coming April 25th,” the streaming platform has tweeted on X/Twitter. The company hasn’t shared further details but we’ll be learning those tomorrow anyway.
As of now, JioCinema only has one “Premium” plan that’ll set you back Rs 999 annually or Rs 99 monthly. But even after paying up for that, you’re still subjected to annoying ad breaks interrupting your binge sessions.
The current Premium plan does give you access to premium content from biggies like HBO and Peacock allows streaming on up to 4 devices in top-quality video and audio. But the main draw has been the free live sports streaming, with tons of new users hopping on to catch the IPL cricket action gratis (albeit peppered with ads).
Unlike its global counterpart Netflix which is a purely paid model, JioCinema uses a hybrid freemium approach. The free tier lets you stream regional movies and shows for zero rupees, banking on ad revenue. But to unlock the premium international stuff, you have to upgrade to a paid subscription.
