Apple to bid adieu to USB-A ports on upcoming M4-powered Mac mini: Report

Apple’s Mac mini is the last of its kind to feature a USB-A port, which will soon disappear in favour of USB-C ports, suggests a Bloomberg report. The report further hints at a revamped design, making it the slimmest Mac mini.

It has been a while since Apple updated the industrial design of the Mac mini, which is currently Apple’s cheapest Mac. The next iteration of the Mac mini, expected to launch in October 2024, is reported to include five USB-C ports, a full-sized HDMI port, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and an ethernet port. We could also see a similar development with the upcoming Mac Pro and Mac Studio variants, which might also lose USB-A ports in favour of more USB-C ports.

In another report, Bloomberg hints at a thinner design, which might have a form factor similar to the current Apple TV 4K, indicating it will be significantly more compact than its predecessor. Despite its shrunk factor, it will be one of the most capable Macs, thanks to the Apple Silicon M4 chip, which was unveiled along with the latest iPad Pro (review).

The upcoming Mac mini M4 is also said to pack an internal power supply and be available in at least two variants: the base model powered by the M4 chip and the high-end model based on the M4 Pro chip. Both models are said to offer at least 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.

It is unclear if these upgrades warrant a price hike compared to the current Mac mini powered by M2, which usually sells for around Rs 50,000 for the base model.
