Apple AirPods are among the highest-selling truly wireless earbuds in the world, and the Cupertino-based tech giant continues to improve them while adding new features and capabilities. According to a Bloomberg report published on Thursday, Apple is currently working on a technology that allows AirPods users to live-translate an in-person conversation from one language to another.

The report highlights that Apple is likely to introduce live translation capabilities to the AirPods through a future software update, which is said to be tied to iOS 19, expected to be demoed at the upcoming WWDC 2025.

Once enabled, the AirPods will function similarly to the Pixel Buds. Powered by the Translator app, users can activate live translation via the AirPods, possibly using a simple gesture. According to Bloomberg, this will be a seamless experience, working similarly to a Star Trek-like scenario. For example, if you speak English and the other person speaks Hindi, AirPods will translate the Hindi speech into English and relay it to your ears, while your English words will be translated into Hindi and played back on the iPhone.

As Apple plans a major software overhaul for iPhone, iPad, and Mac this year, this new experience is said to be part of it.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on third-generation AirPods Pro and a separate model with a built-in camera, which will use Apple Intelligence to analyze the surroundings and offer a cohesive user experience. In 2024, Apple rolled out a software update to the second-generation AirPods Pro, adding hearing aid capabilities. This update allows users to take a hearing test without visiting a doctor, making AirPods the first major consumer TWS earbuds to offer such a feature.
