Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will enhance video calling experience by allowing users to apply various effects and filters.

According to WABetaInfo, the new effects and filters lets users customise their appearance and change the overall colour tone of their feed by letting them choose from a wide range of dynamic facial filters. In addition to this, WhatsApp is also working on a new background editing tool, which, similar to Google Meet will enable users to either blur their surroundings or replace it with one of the preset backgrounds available in the app.

Apart from the new effect and filters, WhatsApp might also introduce a new low-light mode toggle, which, as the name suggests. improves the lighting quality if you are taking a video call in dark areas. Also, a new touch-up feature to smoothen skin and remove blemishes is also reportedly under development.

Available on WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.17.10.74, the report suggests that WhatsApp will remember your last used filter and automatically apply it the next time you start a video call so users don’t have to repeatedly apply these filters and effects. WhatsApp’s AR effects and filters are currently limited to a handful of users, but it is expected to roll over to more people in the near future.

Last week, WhatsApp was spotted working on new custom themes for conversations on Android devices alongside a new functionality that will automatically block messages from unknown numbers. The platform also ported its custom sticker maker tool from iOS to Android .
