Similar to Google Messages, the new functionality will allow users to avoid the hassle of going through a voice note by offering them a text version of the note.
First discovered by WABetaInfo, it looks like WhatsApp has rolled out the new voice note transcription feature to a handful of users in certain countries for those part of the app’s beta program. The report suggests it is appearing for those on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.15.5, which is currently available for download from the Google Play Store.

As you can see in the image, the voice note transcribe feature is enabled for both incoming and outgoing voice messages. The report also suggests that users will have to download an additional package and that the transcription takes place on the device itself, so nobody except you will be able to read the contents of the transcription. Currently available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Hindi, the functionality may be available in other languages in the future.
The voice note transcribe feature is useful if are in a noisy environment with headphones or don’t want to play the note in front of others. Also, it can come in handy if you get a lengthy voice message. And since the audio is converted to text, you might also be able to search through voice messages.
In the last few weeks, WhatsApp has received several new features like Meta AI, a ChatGPT-like conversational chatbot and was reportedly working on some new AI features like Imagine Me, which lets users create an AI version of themselves.
