Instagram confirms it is testing a “dislike” button for comments

The new dislike button is only visible to a handful of users right now.

In the last couple of days, some Instagram users have reported that they are seeing a new “dislike” button when scrolling through the comments section of a post or Reel. Now, in a post on Threads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has confirmed that the company is indeed working on a dislike button.

The new button, which will appear on both Feed posts and Reels, won’t have a dislike count and no one will know if you downvote a comment. However, the number of dislikes on a comment will be used to rank it.

Meta’s implementation of the dislike button is in line with YouTube’s dislike button, which stopped showing the number of dislikes on a video back in 2021.

Mosseri went on to say that the dislike button “gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment” and that it might “help make comments more friendly on Instagram.”

In a statement to The Verge, Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai said that the dislike button was being tested “with a small group of people.” But at the time of writing, Meta hasn’t clarified on when the test will end and if it plans to roll out the new dislike button to more users in the coming weeks.

Recently, the Meta owned social media platform expanded Teen Accounts to India, allowing parents to see and control what their children do and set daily limits and reminders to stop using the app.
