Samsung to unveil new foldable phones at its July 9 event in New York

Samsung is set to launch its next foldable smartphones, likely called the Galaxy Z Flip 7, Fold 7 and Fold Ultra, at its July 9 event in New York.

Samsung sent out invitations Wednesday for a July 9 event in Brooklyn, New York, where the company is expected to debut its latest line of foldable smartphones. The launch event will also be streamed on Samsung’s website and YouTube.

The South Korean tech giant traditionally launches its new foldable phones around this time of year, giving it a head start ahead of fall launch events from Google and Apple.

This year’s Galaxy foldable models — most likely the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 — are expected to feature thinner and lighter designs, better screens, improved cameras, and hopefully, longer battery life. In addition to the mainline Galaxy Z Flip and Fold devices, Samsung has also been teasing an “Ultra experience” in a “smaller and more portable form factor.” This may include a powerful camera and AI-powered tools. It’s likely Samsung could announce an ultra version of the Galaxy Z Fold — its highest-end foldable smartphone yet.

Although the mainstream Galaxy S series remains Samsung’s most important product strategically and economically, the company is increasingly placing its bets on foldable phones. These devices, which feature a single screen that folds in half, gained prominence when Samsung launched its first foldable phone in 2019. Samsung remains the biggest player in the foldable phone market, though Chinese brands — particularly Honor and Oppo — are catching up with thinner and lighter offerings.

Even though the market for foldables remains small compared to traditional smartphones, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities said last week that Apple — which has not yet entered the foldable phone segment — plans to launch a folding iPhone starting next year. Kuo said Apple’s folding phone could have a display made by Samsung Display, which is planning to produce as many as eight million foldable panels for the device next year.

Along with an update to its new foldable phone series, we may also hear more about Project Moohan — Samsung’s mixed-reality headset developed in partnership with Google. The device runs on Android XR, an operating system designed specifically for headsets and smart glasses. The headset is somewhat similar to Apple’s high-end Vision Pro. The Korean company could also debut a new wereable at its Unpacked event.
