Ever since Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Fold, interest in the segment has increased multifold in the last few years. While we have smartphones that can fold in half, there are no tri-fold devices in the market right now. However, that might soon change with Tecno unveiling its new concept device.

At the Internationale FunkAusstellung Berlin (IFA), the Shenzhen based phone maker showcased the Phantom Ultimate 2, an ultra-thin tri-fold phone. The phones has a 6.48-inch screen that can be unfolded to reveal a 10-inch LTPO OLED screen with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels with 4:3 aspect ratio.

Tecno claims that its concept phone is the first in the world with TDDI technology, which enables them to place the display driver and the touch sensor on a single chip. The phone is 11mm thick when folded and features a dual hinge mechanism, which the company claims has been tested for 3,00,000 folds. The phone has a 0.25mm thick battery, which is supposedly the thinnest battery in any smartphone to date.

The company also showcased some unique use cases where the phone could be used as a laptop, where the button half of the screen folds into a keyboard for note taking and a tent mode that puts the display into two equal parts, making it possible for two people to watch content even if they are sitting opposite to each other.

While Tecno did not say if the device will be available for purchase, Huawei might be planning to launch a tri-fold phone sometime in October.
