Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+ launched, both have 5.7-inch QHD screen

Korean electronics giant Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ smartphones at its global event in New York Thursday. With the belief that “bigger screens have now gone from a nice to have thing to a must have” Samsung said it has made it easier to operate the new 5.7-inch display smartphones with one hand.

“At Samsung, we believed in the promise that large screen smartphones could actively address some major consumers pain points by providing users with a better viewing experience and more productivity on-the-go,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics. “With the launch of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5, we’re reemphasizing our ongoing commitment to bold, fearless innovation that meets the needs of our consumers.”

Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ share the same hardware. While the Galaxy S6 edge+ sports a dual curved screen like the earlier Galaxy S6 Edge, the Note 5 has a dual curved back and a flat display. Both the devices offer a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display at a pixel density of 518ppi. The edge screen on the S6 edge+ can now be used to pin five favourite apps along with contacts.

The Note 5 comes with an improved S Pen. The new stylus can be taken out with a click instead to using the nails to force it out, like in earlier Note versions. Also, in the new Note 5, users can take notes by using the stylus without unlocking the device.

Running on Android 5.1 Lollipop OS, the new devices are powered by an octa-core Exynos 7420 processor with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The new smartphones will come in 32GB and 64GB internal memory options. There are no microSD card slots and both the devices are powered by 3,000 mAh batteries.

On the camera front, Note 5 and S6 edge+ houses a 16MP OIS f1.9 rear camera along with a 5MP f1.9 front snapper. On the connectivity front, it comes with Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS/ A-GPS, and Micro-USB 2.0. Both the devices come with fingerprint scanners.

While the Galaxy edge+ measures 154.4×75.8×6.9 mm and weighs 153 grams, the Note 5 is heavier at 171 grams and measures 153.2×76.1×7.6mm, mainly due to the stylus. Both smartphones will be available in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, and Silver Titanium colour options.
