The foldable smartphone segment is currently dominated by Samsung. (Image Source: Pixabay)Chinese smartphone maker Honor recently said that it wants to compete with Samsung in the foldable phone segment and confirmed that it is planning to launch a new flip-style phone.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Honor CEO George Zhao said that its first flip phone will be coming sometime later this year and that they are currently in the final stages of development. He added that the company is “very positive about foldable for the future” but shared no information about the upcoming device’s hardware and design.
However, Honor’s first flip phone is said to have some AI features, but it remains to be seen if they will be better than existing features from Google and Samsung. Zhao also said that they are working on a smart ring to take on Samsung’s recently unveiled Galaxy Ring, which offers a plethora of fitness tracking features and lasts for more than a week on a single charge.
Honor has some experience making foldable phones, but all of them are like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series devices.
Talking about AI-powered features, Zhao said that “the value of the technology will come when a device is able to anticipate what you’d like to do next.” The company recently demoed the Magic 6 Pro at the Mobile World Congress, a phone that can track the user’s eye movements.
The company already has launched some foldable phones, but all of them are book-style devices that can be unfolded to reveal a huge tablet-like screen. While Honor has found some success in the Chinese market, the company now seems to be focusing its attention on the international market, especially in Latin American countries and Brazil, which it says is one of the most “crucially important” markets for its expansion plans.
