Apple iPhone satellite features: iPhone users could soon get access to a wider range of satellite-powered features, as Apple is reportedly working on expanding its suite of connectivity tools beyond emergency calling and texting services.

The new iPhone features would leverage satellite connectivity to allow users to use Apple Maps without an internet connection, send photos in messaging, etc, according to the latest edition of the ‘Power On’ newsletter by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

While these features are still under development, they will reportedly be free to use but users may have to pay their telecom carriers extra for more advanced support. As per Gurman’s report, Apple currently has no plans to enable phone calls, video calls, or web browsing via satellite.

Internally, the company has reportedly discussed launching its own satellite connectivity service. However, concerns were raised that it would make Apple a carrier. There is, however, a possibility that Apple could partner with a satcom giant like SpaceX to offer users a paid option for extended connectivity.

Existing satellite-based iOS features run on a network owned by Globalstar. The iPhone-maker reportedly helped to finance and upgrade Globalstar’s infrastructure so that it could support the in-development features.

Apple’s focus on developing satellite-powered features is significant because it could potentially increase the usability of iPhones since they would enable users to perform certain tasks even if they are outside the range of traditional cell networks.

The company closed its fiscal 2025 on a high note, reporting record September-quarter revenue of $102.5 billion, an 8 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase, powered by strong iPhone and Services sales, especially in markets like India.
