On Wednesday, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union minister for railways, information and broadcasting, and electronics and information technology, shared a video of him testing a completely made-in-India laptop by a company called VVDN Technologies.

Puneet Agarwal, CEO of VVDN Technologies, in the video shared by the IT minister, says, “Hardware, motherboard, mechanicals, body or chassis, and software are made in India and are on par with international standards.”

While the video does not reveal exact details about the laptop, the official website states that VVDN Technologies provides entry-level laptop solutions to OEMs for white-labelling with varied specifications.

The specifications of one such laptop include a 14-inch display, an Intel Celeron processor, up to 256GB of SATA SSD storage, and up to 8GB of RAM, running on Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 operating system.

The website also mentions that the laptop is available for white labelling and mass manufacturing, with support for additional customisation as required. This means you won’t see a VVDN Technologies-branded laptop in the Indian market anytime soon, as these products will be sold under different, more consumer-recognised brand names.

There has been a steady improvement in hardware manufacturing in India, driven by the Make in India initiative, which offers a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to encourage manufacturers to assemble and produce electronic products locally, helping brands reduce import costs.

The Government of India also issued a ban on laptop and tablet imports in 2023, which was soon lifted to prevent supply shortages and allow brands sufficient time to set up manufacturing facilities in India.
