Sony has started testing cloud streaming support for supported PlayStation 5 titles, which includes games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, Game Trials and digital titles players already own. The company says the feature will enable players to play their favourite games without having to download them on the console.
According to a blog post by Sony, cloud streaming will be available to PlayStation 5 owners with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. The company has started rolling out cloud streaming of select games made for the PS3 and the PS4 with plans to bring more upcoming PS5 titles.
Currently, PlayStation 5 owners can stream their favourite games to other devices like iOS, Android, PC and Mac, but requires users to download the entire game on their console. Sony added that cloud gaming is still in the early stages of development and is yet to share any timeline on when the new feature will be available.
Sony has previously tried its hand at cloud gaming with the now redundant PS Plus subscription, which let users stream PS1, PS2 and PS3 titles. This might mean that the upcoming Sony PlayStation handheld that can stream games from PS5 over Wi-Fi might not support the feature out of the box.
In 2019, Sony announced a partnership with Microsoft to develop cloud solutions for gaming and streaming content, but with the company mentioning AWS in recent job listings, its partnership with the Redmond-based tech giant might well be over.
