On Thursday, at the Google for India 2024 event, Hema Budaraju, the product lead of Google’s search team, announced that Gemini Live, a conversational AI feature, now supports nine additional Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, and Urdu.
At first, Gemini Live was limited to Gemini Advanced users, but it was recently rolled out for free to Android and iOS users in 10 different voices. The same can now be accessed using one of the nine aforementioned Indian languages. Gemini can understand and respond in these languages.
According to Budaraju, “This can be a game changer for teachers, entrepreneurs, artists, and everyone, as we are making it even more accessible with the power of your voice, as over 40 per cent of Gemini Indian language users are already using the voice feature.”
“Gemini is constantly learning and growing, and our Gemini models are also helping us reimagine Google Search for you. It’s helping us unlock entirely new types of questions and transforming the way information is organised in search to make sense of what’s out there,” Budaraju said.
Gemini Live allows users to have natural, flowing voice conversations on phones with real-time responses. Similarly, Google is also expanding its search’s AI overviews, which were already available in English and Hindi, to additional Indian languages like Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil in the coming weeks. This helps users find quick information on the Google search result page.
