Apple had planned a scheduled release for its new AI experiences. This included a smarter and more intelligent Siri capable of tapping into users’ personal information to deliver precise answers to queries. Had everything gone as anticipated, the upcoming iOS 18.4 update, expected to arrive in April, would have introduced the revamped Siri. However, in a press statement issued on March 7, Apple confirmed the new Siri will not be arriving until “the coming year.”
Although Apple has not cited a specific reason for the delay, a report by Bloomberg suggests it is likely due to challenges in the development and enhancement of the feature. Apple engineers have reportedly been working around the clock to fix several bugs, while top executives, who have been personally testing the feature, are said to be unhappy with its current state.
The report also said that Apple could potentially scrap the current team responsible for developing these AI features and might even consider rebuilding the technology from scratch. This could explain the delay.
Although Apple has added some new capabilities to Siri with the iOS 18 update, including ChatGPT integration, the underlying technology remains largely unchanged from the previous version. The only major change is a new glowing user interface, and this is limited to iPhones that support Apple Intelligence.
This updated Siri was expected to deliver a more personalised ChatGPT-like experience. The delay could be a setback for the multi-trillion-dollar company, as Apple has been advertising these features for over six months without a concrete release date. This uncertainty suggests that even the upcoming iPhone 17 series, expected to launch in late 2025, might not arrive with the complete Apple Intelligence experience.
