Anthropic launches Claude 3.5 Sonnet, claims it is better than GPT-4o and Gemini 1.5 Pro

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is available on iOS and web platforms. It is the company’s mid-tier offering, Haiku being the smallest model and Opus being the high-end model.

Anthropic claims that Claude 3.5 Sonnet considerably outperforms its predecessor, Claude 3 Opus, boasting nearly double the speed and superior performance across benchmarks. According to Anthropic, Claude 3.5 Sonnet surpasses GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5 Pro, and Llama 3 400B in seven out of nine general benchmarks and four out of five vision benchmarks.

The company says its latest model is better when it comes to writing, translating code, interpreting charts and graphs and transcribing text from images and can understand humour much better.

In addition to its new large language model (LLM), Anthropic also introduced a new feature called ‘Artifacts’, which lets users see and interact with Claude’s output. For example, if you ask Claude to write an email, users will be able to edit the generated output in the app instead of requiring users to copy it to a text editor. While this may not be a groundbreaking feature, it is pretty useful since it makes Claude more than just an AI-powered chatbot.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is currently available for everyone and can be used for free from the company’s website (Claude.ai) or using the Claude app on iPhone. Earlier this year in March, Anthropic unveiled Claude 3.0, which outperformed GPT-4 across multiple parameters.
