Here's how you can animate your children's drawings in a few steps. (Image Source: Meta) Meta recently open-sourced an artificial intelligence project that can help you turn your drawing and doodles into animations. The tech giant says that making the project open-source will help developers add and work on new features.
In 2021, Meta released a web version of its Animated Drawing tool which allowed users that allowed people to upload images and get a short animation of their drawn characters. The company says more than 6.7 million images were uploaded during the demo phase which were then filtered by human reviewers who shared them with the Meta research team.
The Animated Drawing tool uses object detection models along with some other models like pose estimation and image processing-based segmentation to make a digital version of the drawings. Once done, it makes use of existing graphics techniques to animate the object.
Meta recently made the project open source with a dataset of around 180,000 drawings and shared the animation pipeline code so more users and developers can contribute to the project and expand on its capabilities.

In case you are interested in trying out the Animation Drawing tool, it can be accessed by visiting sketch.metademolab.com and uploading the image you want to animate.
To upload the image, simply click on the ‘Upload Photo’ button. Here, you can choose to contribute to the project by letting Meta train its dataset using your image.
Next, you have to resize the uploaded image using the capture box that pops up so it only contains your drawn character. Meta also offers a pen and eraser tool that helps you assign the various joints of your drawing.
Now you can choose from four available animations presets – walking, dance, jumping and funny which will show you how your drawing moves. There are a number of actions you can choose from, so it might take a while before you find the one you want.
