Apple on Wednesday, October 15, introduced its next-generation iPad Pro powered by its most advanced chip yet – the M5 chip. The new device boasts a dramatic leap in performance, especially for AI and graphics-intensive workflows.
The Cupertino-based tech giant claims that the new device has AI performance faster by up to 3.5x than the iPad Pro with the M4 chip. It is 5.6x faster when compared with the original iPad Pro with M1.
The M5 chip is at the core of Apple’s latest announcement. The latest and most sophisticated silicon chip integrates a 10-core GPU (each core having a Neural Accelerator), a 16-core Neural Engine, and a 10-core CPU (four performance and six efficiency cores).
According to Apple, the M5 chip offers up to 1.5x faster 3D rendering and up to 6.7x faster than M1 models. It offers 6x faster video transcoding in Final Cut Pro, up to 4x faster AI image generation in apps such as Draw Things, and up to 3.7x faster AI video upscaling in DaVinci Resolve.
The new enhancements seem to be focused on creative and AI workflows. With these, users working with advanced graphics, video editing, 3D rendering, or on-device generative AI are likely to see significant productivity and performance improvements. To support this boost, Apple has also enhanced other subsystems – unified memory bandwidth exceeds 150 GB/s, storage read/write speeds are doubled in some configurations, and starting unified memory is bumped.
The new iPad Pro is thin, bright, and feature-rich. The iPad Pro M5 comes in 11-inch and 13-inch variants in silver and space black finishes in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations. While the 11-inch model is just 5.3 mm thick, the 13-inch pushes to 5.1 mm in thickness.
It comes with an Ultra Retina XDR display, built on a tandem OLED architecture, supports up to 1,000 nits full-screen brightness (HDR/SDR) and 1,600 nits at peak. A nano-texture glass option is available to mitigate glare without compromising quality. Moreover, the iPad Pro can drive external displays at up to 120 Hz, and supports Adaptive Sync, ensuring smoother motion and lower latency for pro workflows and gaming.
The new iPad Pro starts at Rs 99,990 for the 11-inch Wi-Fi model and Rs 1,19,900 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular version. The 13-inch iPad Pro starts at Rs 1,29,900 for the Wi-Fi model and Rs 1,49,900 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. With education pricing, the 11-inch iPad Pro is available from Rs 89,900, while the 13-inch model starts at Rs 1,09,900.
