Yash Dayal helped Royal Challengers Bangalore script a sensational 2-run win over Chennai Super Kings, and it was largely his wicket of MS Dhoni that set the tone for his last over heroics with three natty yorkers.
Asked by IPL socials if there was a split screen similarity between his two scalpings of Dhoni – in 2024 and now given both were full toss yorkers, forcing false shots, Dayal agreed. “Last year & this year’s wicket wasn’t much of a difference. In 2024, he was catch out, this year was lbw on yorker ball. I was only thinking of how to execute it. No intention of getting Dhoni wicket specifically. Got it by chance. I got lucky there,” he quipped, adding, “I had the confidence I can do it.”
Dayal had induced Dhoni into hoicking the yorker on off stump to deep midwicket last season, but this year trapped him lbw with a similar delivery.
Romario Shepherd, the RCB batting hero, was full of praise for Dayal. “His execution was spot on. Right through the game he was bowling well. His composure was exceptional after getting hit for six on a no-ball. We all know how good he can be for this is not the first time. Against Rajasthan also he defended 17. Hope his confidence stays high,” he told RCB socials.
His trademark celebration too seemed ditto like Dhoni ’24. “I was focussed on telling Bethell at long off to throw to other end. But when I realised we had won, I celebrated.”
Suyash Sharma had done the invisible work in 18th over that yielded just 1, 0, 1, 1, 2, 1. But Dayal’s was the crucial final over.
Ravi Shastri had said on commentary about him holding his nerve, “To work out it had needed an outstanding last over from Yash Dayal. To use all his experience. Inspite of that six being hit, inspire of no ball and a free hit being on offer, to come back and regain your composure. And bowl those three yorkers. It was a testimony of your character and what you have learnt from past experiences. His work ethic…..”
JioStar expert Ambati Rayudu shared his opinion about the RCB vs CSK game, added it boded well for the team. “That finish towards the end, and also the final over delivered by Yash Dayal, was phenomenal. That’s the kind of belief you want in your dugout when you’re aiming to win a championship, to win the IPL. And it feels all the better, and gives you a lot of confidence, especially when you achieve it against your arch-rivals,” he said.
