Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar slammed Punjab Kings all-rounder Glenn Maxwell for his poor start to the IPL 2025 season, adding that the Australian puts in one good performance every 75 games, just “like Halley’s Comet.”
Manjrekar’s unique astronomical reference to Maxwell’s form came after the 36-year-old failed to bail Punjab out of trouble in a 206-run chase against the Rajasthan Royals in Mullanpur on Saturday.
Walking in at No. 6 in the seventh over of the chase following a collapse, Maxwell struggled to consistently find boundaries before holing out for 30 in 21 balls.
“Halley’s Comet orbits the sun and is visible from Earth once every 75 years. Just like that, Glenn Maxwell plays one good match in 75 games. It was last seen in 1986, and it will now be spotted in 2061. It’s the same case with Maxwell in batting. Glenn Maxwell is Halley’s Comet of Cricket,” Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.
Maxwell was previously dismissed for a duck against the Gujarat Titans, one that he could have prevented had he chosen to review left-arm spinner Sai Kishore’s delivery that struck his pad. Maxwell’s dip in form also coincided with a semi-final exit for Australia at the recent Champions Trophy, scoring only 39 runs in three matches.
Maxwell’s IPL paycheck was reduced to Rs 4.2 crore at the Mega Auction table last year, generating minimal interest among franchises after his horrendous season with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Battling a wretched run, Maxwell amassed only 52 runs in 10 outings at a lowly 5.2 average and 120.93 strike rate before RCB opted against retaining his services for the 2025 season.
