Top scorer in FIFA World Cup (men’s and women’s) history, Marta – 17 goals – bowed out of the big stage after Brazil shared points with Jamaica in one of the biggest upsets at the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Wednesday.

Marta was featuring in her sixth and final World Cup and with Brazil having eliminated from the group stage, came to an the 37-year-old’s run at the marquee tournament.

“For me, that is the end, but it’s just the beginning for the others,” she’d say post-match.

In the moments that followed the final whistle in Melbourne, Marta would share a hug and a warm exchange of dialogue with the Jamaica captain Bunny Shaw.

The draw on Wednesday meant a first World Cup group stage exit for Brazil Women in 28 years.

“Whether she’s good enough to be called up to the national team, let’s see,” said Brazil head coach Pia Sundhage. “As long as I am coaching the national team, I am going to do a lot of work to find new players.

“That means it’s going to be harder for Marta to play going forward.”
