Madan Lal hails selectors for making Shubman Gill captain: ‘Interesting to see how Rohit Sharma performs…’

Shubman Gill has been named the captain of the ODI series for the upcoming Australia series starting October 19. Earlier, the 26-year-old was also named the skipper of the red-ball side, and he has had a decent tour as captain to England. However, for the red-ball series, Gill was handed over the captaincy after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had retired, but in the ODI scenario, Gill has been handed the captaincy, removing Rohit from captaincy.

“This is an excellent decision by the selectors. Making Gill captain is a forward-looking move. He will be prepared for the World Cup. Now it will be interesting to see how Rohit Sharma performs under Gill’s leadership,” said former Indian cricketer Madan Lal, speaking to Cricket Predicta.

Shubman Gill is an excellent leader and has proven himself in Test cricket. He came very close to breaking Don Bradman’s record. He is the future, and the selectors have made that clear. We must give him time to mature as a captain, especially as we aim for ODI glory in 2027. This series will provide him with the necessary exposure,” Lal further added.

“I don’t see Virat and Rohit playing in the 2027 World Cup… Pant, yes, despite being injury-prone. The team will rely on young leaders like Gill to shape the future. This is a perfect opportunity for him to step up and guide India to success,” said another former cricketer David Gower.

“Firstly, it’s practically impossible to have three different captains for three formats (Suryakumar Yadav is the T20I captain). Just in terms of planning. Obviously, at some stage, you’ve got to start looking at where the next World Cup is. It’s also a format that is played the least now. So you don’t get that many games to actually give the next guy, or if there is going to be another guy, that much time to prepare himself or plan. And we’re two years away still. It might look like a long time, but we don’t quite know how many one-day games we might play. Closer to the World Cup, we might end up playing a little bit more than what we have. But the last one-day game we played was in March in the Champions Trophy. And the next one we play is on October 19,” Agrakar said on the reason behind picking Gill as captain.
