In a surprise move, the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) appointed as head coach Gary Stead, who steered New Zealand to World Test Championship triumph in 2021. Andhra had mediocre results last season after they finished sixth in Ranji Trophy Elite group B with just one win, and in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, they ended fourth in a team competition and lost to Uttar Pradesh in the pre-quarterfinal of the T20 Syed Mustaq Ali trophy.
President of ACA, Kesineni Sivnath, said the appointment of Stead is to raise the standard of cricket in the state.”Gary Stead is not just a coach—he’s a culture-builder. His arrival signals our intent to raise the bar in talent development, tactical preparation, and operational discipline. ACA is thrilled to have him on board, and we’re confident his mentorship will inspire our players and coaches alike,” said the press release by ACA.
Stead had a successful period with New Zealand at the helm for seven years. In his tenure, alongside winning the inaugural WTC final against India at Southampton, New Zealand also managed to reach the final of the 2019 World Cup, which they narrowly missed to claim the trophy from England on boundary count. The Kiwis also rose to number one in both ODIs and Test matches during this phase.
However, earlier in June, his tenure with the Blackcaps ended. Stead would mention “Passion for cricket and ACA’s commitment as reasons behind taking up the job. “I’m honoured to join the Andhra Cricket Association as the Head Coach of the Senior Men’s team for the 2025–26 season. The passion for cricket here is palpable, and ACA’s commitment to legacy and development resonates deeply with me. I look forward to working closely with the players, support staff, and leadership to build a team that competes with heart and purpose.”
“Gary’s appointment marks a new chapter in Andhra cricket. His global experience and values align perfectly with ACA’s vision of building a legacy rooted in integrity, performance, and inclusivity. We warmly welcome him to our cricketing family and look forward to a transformative season ahead,” said Sana Satheesh Babu, Secretary of ACA.
This is not the first time a foreign coach has taken up a domestic job in India. Michael Bevan coached Odisha, Lance Klusener was with Tripura, Dav Whatmore managed Kerala and Baroda, Intikhab Alam coaches Punjab, Darren Holder, Shaun Williams and Dermot Reeve have coaches Maharashtra at different stages.
