Former England pacer James Anderson has said that England will be in two minds over whether to continue with their all-pace strategy used at the Optus Stadium in Perth, or switch up their tactics for the Gabba Test starting December 4.

Anderson felt that England weren’t able to counter Travis Head because the first innings gave away their strategy of bowling at Perth.

“The all-pace attack 100% worked in the first innings. We landed a few blows,” Anderson said on BBC’s Tailenders Podcast. He then said, “Head knew they were bowling short, so he just sat on the back foot and hit his areas.”

Head’s century led an Australian fightback in the second innings. Anderson’s take on the Australian’s innings was that the all-pace attack lost its potency once the plan on how to bowl was figured out by the hosts. The former pacer also felt that England, in that moment, missed a spinner or a bowler who could have brought a change to the pace of the game.

“I just wonder whether we lack a nuance with a bit of something different and a change of pace, whether that is a spinner or a slightly different pacer. There was no frontline spinner to just bowl four overs and change the pace of the game and make it slightly different for Head and give him something else to think about,” he said.

But Anderson felt that England would likely take the same squad to play in the day-night Test match in Brisbane and said that the seamers could end up playing a crucial role under the lights.

“I think that will be in their heads, and I would not be surprised at all if we went with the same side,” he said.
