(AP) The senior national selection committee which will meet on the sidelines of India vs Afghanistan on Wednesday is set to take a call on Shubman Gill’s participation in the remainder of India’s World Cup matches.
Gill, who landed in Chennai with dengue, has already missed their opening fixture against Australia and continues to recover in the city as he is set to even miss the match against Pakistan on October 14.
The Indian Express understands that Gill will take more than a week to recover and the selection committee is set to discuss with the team management if a replacement has to be kept ready. In case the team puts in a request, Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ruturaj Gaikwad could end up joining the team as a cover.
This paper had first reported that Gill is suffering from dengue just few days before India vs Australia opening World Cup game. On Monday as the Indian team headed to Delhi to face Afghanistan, Gill stayed back in the city and The Indian Express understands that he was taken to a private hospital in the city after he complained of severe fatigue. He stayed overnight at the hospital and after undergoing further tests in the morning, Gill left to the hotel. It is reliably learnt that the doctors have advised him 48 hours of rest and his condition would be assessed again on Thursday. In a normal circumstances, it takes minimum three weeks for any patient to recover from dengue and the fatigue.
The BCCI in its press release informed that Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th. “The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in its statement.
Except for a mini-slump during the West Indies tour, Gill has been showing incredible consistency. He was the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League with 890 runs and topped the batting charts in the recent Asia Cup with 302 runs. In the last few innings, he has scores of 104, 74, 27*, 121, 19, 58 and 67*.
