As the Centre announced a Rs 200 cut in LPG cylinder prices, BJP ministers and leaders hailed the “gift”, the “bold step” and “the monumental stride” of the Narendra Modi government in making the move, while the party linked the same to Onam and Raksha Bandhan festivals, and in his official X handle, the Prime Minister hoped for the well-being of “my sisters”.

In the post, the PM said he hoped that the price cut “will increase the comfort of the sisters in my family and make their lives easier. May every sister of mine be happy, be healthy, this is my wish from God”.

With the BJP hoping to make a strike against rising prices with the LPG cylinder move, the Opposition tried to link the government’s decision to its campaign on the issue. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee tweeted: “Till now, only TWO meetings have been held in the past TWO months by the INDIA alliance and today, we see that LPG prices have gone down by Rs. 200.”

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge posted: “As votes are falling, poll gifts are raining. The party that has robbed people of their hard-earned money is showing false sympathy for people.”

Hours earlier, the Congress, which has promised cheaper cylinders as part of its poll promise, put up a post saying I.N.D.I.A was needed to fight inflation. It was part of the party’s I.N.D.IA. teasers ahead of the third meeting of the Opposition alliance, to be held in Mumbai over August 31-September 1.

Other I.N.D.I.A constituents too have been putting up similar teasers ahead of the Mumbai meeting.

In other posts, the Congress tried to pin the government over China including disputed areas in a map, pointing out that it had followed days after the BRICS meeting, and again accusing the Modi government of bowing before Beijing.

However, as far as muscle-flexing goes, the day belonged to Haryana Deputy Chief Minister and Jannayak Janata Party leader Dushyant Chautala. Having let off steam in the Assembly over a discussion on the flood situation in the state, he was seen doing push-ups along with a visitor at his residence Tuesday.
