EC says AAP protest violated model code

It began with some workers shouting slogans, but soon turned violent, leaving several people injured.

The Delhi Chief Electoral Office (CEO) on Monday said it had forwarded its report — on the protest carried out by Aam Aadmi Party’s workers outside the BJP headquarters last week — to the Election Commission of India (ECI).

According to sources, the CEO’s office has agreed to the recommendations made by the district election officer (DEO), which recommended action against the AAP for violating the model code of conduct (MCC). The protests, held on March 5, were sparked by Arvind Kejriwal’s detention in Gujarat.

It began with some workers shouting slogans, but soon turned violent, leaving several people injured. Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev confirmed that he had sent the report to ECI in which his office had agreed to the observations of DEO. Sources said the DEO had expressed dissatisfaction with AAP’s reply. According to the Delhi EC, the AAP had not taken permission from either the local police or a competent authority for the protest. The EC said the protest disturbed the peace of residents in the area.
