Congress fields Rawat’s wife, Bahuguna’s son

Uttarakhand which has five Lok Sabha seats will go to polls on May 7.

The Congress has fielded Chief Minister Harish Rawat’s wife Renuka Rawat and former CM Vijay Bahuguna’s son Saket Bahuguna as its candidates from the Hardwar and Tehri Lok Sabha seats respectively. Harak Singh Rawat, who is a minister in the Harish Rawat government, would be Congress party’s candidate for the Pauri Garhwal seat.

Three days before the beginning of poll process in Uttarakhand, the Congress high command has cleared the names of Renuka, Saket and Harak as its candidates on Wednesday. Uttarakhand which has five Lok Sabha seats will go to polls on May 7.

The Congress has announced the names of Pradeep Tamta and K C Singh Baba as its candidates for Almora and Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar seats. Both Tamta and Baba are sitting MP from the same seats.

The Congress captured Uttarakhand’s five Lok Sabha seats in 2009 polls. Later, BJP leader Mala Rakya Laxmi Shah defeated the then Congress candidate Saket Bahuguna in the Tehri bypoll which was necessitated after then MP Vijay Bahuguna’s resignation. Bahuguna was then chief minister of Uttarakhand.

Renuka is Congress candidate for Hardwar seat in place of her husband and CM Harish Rawat who had won this seat in 2009 LS elections.

The BJP has fielded three former CMs — B C Khanduri, Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank – from Pauri Garhwal, Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar and Hardwar seats respectively.
