Cong MLAs to take part in discussion on Afzal resolution

The decision on the issue would be taken by the legislators,Soz said.

Remaining non-commital on the issue proposed resolution favouring clemency for Afzal Guru to be taken up by J-K Assembly during its session beginning tomorrow,Congress today said its legislators would participate in the discussion and take a decision on the floor of the House.

“Our legislators will go to the Assembly. And they will participate in the discussions… what are listed” Jammu and Kashmir Congress Chief Saif-Uddin-Soz said.

The decision on the issue would be taken by the legislators,Soz said.

To a question whether Congress legislators would abstain from discussion over the issue,he said,”They will participate in discussions”.

To another question whether they would support or oppose it,he said,”It would be decided by legislators as the concerns the Assembly”.

On September 28,the resolution moved by Independent MLA

Abdul Rashid seeking clemency for Guru,who is on death row for his role in the attack on Parliament in December 2001,would be discussed in the Assembly.

While PDP has voiced support to the motion,BJP has said it will oppose it.

Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand had earlier stressed on not raising any controversial issue to ensure a smooth session.

“As a policy matter,PDP is against capital punishment. We have supported mercy for Afzal Guru right from the day his death sentence was announced,” PDP president Mehbooba Mufti had said.

Former union minister and suspended BJP MLA Chaman Lal Gupta had said the state legislative assembly does not have powers to pass such a resolution.

The ruling NC has said the issue would be decided in the legislature party meeting.
