BSP TN unit chief held for law college campus violence

The arrest comes in the wake of the Supreme Court directing Tamil Nadu DGP to file an affidavit.

BSP’s Tamil Nadu unit chief K Armstrong was arrested on Sunday in connection with 2008 violence in law college campus here involving two groups of students.

Armstrong,who had contested against DMK leader and Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin from Kolathur constituency in the April 13 assembly polls,was arrested from a hotel in Chennai,police said.

His arrest comes in the wake of the Supreme Court directing Tamil Nadu DGP to file an affidavit explaining why the accused named as “absconding” in the charge sheet filed in connection with the clash at Dr Ambedkar Law College in November 2008 were not arrested.

The court hearing a petition alleging non-action by police to prevent the clash had asked how an accused who had contested elections was shown as “absconding”.

Counsel for the petitioner had submitted that 11 persons,including Armstrong,had been shown as ‘absconding’ accused and they were yet to be arrested.

Many students were injured in the bloody violence in November,2008 with police being charged with remaining mute spectators.
