The Islamabad High Court in Pakistan has overturned the jail sentence of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday in a case related to the leaking of state secrets, news agency Reuters reported citing local media and his lawyer.

Khan, 71, and his aide and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were earlier convicted in the case and were handed a 10-year prison sentence by a special court which was established under the Official Secrets Act.

The charges that were levelled on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader were that of making public a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington in 2022.

Although, the verdict is a matter of cheer for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party but both the leaders aren’t going to be released from jail.

Since, ex Prime Minister Imran Khan was also sentenced in the Iddat case whereas Qureshi was arrested in the case pertaining to violence which erupted on May 9 last year after the arrest of Khan, both the leaders are bound to remain in jail.
