Opinion When Simi Did a Kiki

Now Simi is back with ‘Simi Selects India’s Most Desirable’. Clearly she heeded the channel’s diktat.

Before Karan Johar, there was Simi Garewal. Her show,‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’ with its overdose of white and saccharine had a following,to the extent that it gave birth to the howlarious MTV spoof,‘Semi Girebaal’ with VJ Cyrus Sahukar in a drag. Cyrus’ show provided the laughs while Simi preferred if her guests shed some tears when they were perched all dolled up,on her white wrought iron bench. The outdoor- patio setting of the show was a testament to the tone of the show—it was formal, propah and very high tea-ish.

Then came Karan with his brew of controversies and scandals with ‘Koffee with Karan’. Beautiful stars in beautiful clothes – most of them Karan’s friends—sat on his couch, sipped his coffee and had a bitch fest. The vibe was young, glam and bitchy. ‘Koffee with Karan’ soon became a refresher course of all things gossipy in B town. The fact that Mumbai tabloids are running dry since Karan’s show ended is proof enough.

Now Simi is back with ‘Simi Selects India’s Most Desirable’. Clearly she heeded the channel’s diktat. You can see the effort that has gone to make the show and Simi look age appropriate. By the way, what was up with her medieval style tasseled attire and why did she keep tugging the right side of her hair!!! Not that I’m being extra picky but Simi was so propah in Rendezvous. Also, her idea of young is quite skewed, its very ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ where people still go around saying,“Too cool, man.” Sorry Simi, but the days of Brandon & Brenda is over. These days,we are into Blair & Bass. If Karan’s show thrived on its ‘Gossip Girl’ vibe,Simi’s show appeared as a cross between her old show and her trying very hard to be like Karan’s show. The result was a trainwreck.

She got the current “Prince” of B town,Ranbir Kapoor as her first guest. From Ranbir’s expression,it appeared even he was as surprised as us when she turned the show into his matrimonial ad. Ranbir sat politely, smiled appropriately and let his parents (Rishi & Neetu contradicting each other about their son’s demeanor) and his hostess do the best damage control evah after the Deepika Padukone- Sonam Kapoor ‘Koffee with Karan’ episode. The only time Ranbir cringed was when his mum called him “Raymond” as in the perfect man. Maybe he doesn’t like the name because that’s the one time he apologized for this gush fest overdose.

Simi clearly wanted Ranbir to get onto the roller coaster with her. She got a tarot reader (in a leopard style jumpsuit to boot) to read his cards who got a high five from the Kapoor boy not for her dress, silly, but the big reveal that the cards foretold her: “Ranbir is a committed sort of person contrary to his image.” With a name like Personality Café,what else could we expect from this segment.

Next was the segment titled Minefield and the leopard or was it the tiger print, and the tarot was forgotten. With its thunder & lightening effect, the segment took me back to the days of BR Chopra’s ‘Mahabharat’. I almost expected Ranbir to suddenly shout out “Pitamah”.

And then out came tumbling Kiki, the supposed-to-be-19-but-sounding-like-a-5-year-old alter ego of Simi. There is no way that I can describe Kiki. With the pout, the baby talk and the clingy way she held on to Ranbir’s hands,Simi turned Kiki into an art form,of a cringe worthy kind. After watching Simi do her thing as Kiki,I just felt bad for all those girls who are named Kiki.

She tried to do a Karan but in her first episode,Simi ended up doing a Nikki Bedi. Almost.
