Wrong model
Minxin Peis Bridging the gap (IE,July 19) was thought- provoking. Chinas infrastructure stories are always used to denigrate the tardy pace of infrastructure creation in India. But the principles of social justice are never completely lost sight of in India. The Chinese agenda of mega infrastructure projects at the cost of nameless peasants and small land owners should serve as a grim reminder to Indias policy-makers that big- ticket projects have to be tempered with a generous dose of socio-economic benefit for the masses.

Reversing reforms?
Apropos Pratap Bhanu Mehtas The great churning (IE,July 22),it seems our political leadership has lost the opportunity they had given themselves two decades ago. They seem to be racing back to square one. No doubt the economic liberalisation had opened the floodgates of fast growth, but our planners forgot that the pre-condition for sustained welfare is persistent growth. They have failed to come out of their pre-liberalisation mindset, which rests on secrecy, hierarchy and the red-tape. The UPA refuses to apply any correctives. Painfully, this is leading the nation to stagnation and a reversal of the 1991 reforms.

Congresss wounds
The Congress appears to be afflicted by the problems associated with ageing. With a one-point agenda of unseating the TDP,the Congress shook hands with the TRS in 2004. But after securing its majority in the Andhra assembly,it dumped Telangana. Then it buckled when K. Chandrashekar Rao began his fast, making the unwise announcement on Telangana, giving the movement a fresh lease of life. Thereafter, the Congress allowed its leaders from the region to deprive the TRS of its primacy. Those MPs and MLAs have now revolted and resigned. Its clear that the Telangana issue has become a burning problem, thanks to a series of policy blunders by the oldest party, which is nothing but a self-inflicted wound.

Good job
Amidst all the news of corruption, scandals and terrorism, the heartening bit was that of martyr Vijay Salaskars daughter getting the job (Salaskars daughter finally gets govt job,IE,July 22). But that she had to meet the Union home minister appear for this just shows the insensitivity of the state government.

Iron grips
The Karnataka Lokayuktas report has come at the right time (Lessons of iron,IE,July 22). From the report, its to be believed that the scam involves corruption in the highest offices of power in the state. The BJP,crying out against corruption at the Centre, has something on its own hands too. It offers all parties a chance to clean up at the Centre and at state levels.
