UPA divided
*While Maoists are on the rampage in several states, the government seems to be divided on the issue of strategy to tackle the menace (Now West Bengal: Maoists kill CRPF Dy Commandant,4 men,IE,May 20). In open defiance of the law,Maoists are butchering innocent civilians and hapless policemen. Paradoxically, while the countrys major opposition party, the BJP has pledged total support to operations against Naxals,it is some Congress veterans who continue to express doubts about the strategy. Very recently,a Congress leading light publicly pulled up the home minister for launching an all-out war. He later regretted his remarks but the damage had been done and the states credibility dented. However, some Congressmen still continue to voice their reservations about the effectiveness of the governments policy against the Naxals. You cannot fight the enemy with one hand tied. In this hour of crisis all well-wishers of the nation must stand behind the government.

Waiting for what?
*This refers to the editorial A larger mandate (IE,May 19). Hundreds of innocent lives continue to be lost, innumerable security personnel are getting killed, property worth crores continues getting destroyed railway tracks, trains. Yet the larger mandate remains elusive. Parliament sessions come and go,committees are set up,strategies are revisited; still,a band of hardly 20,000 extremists continue to hold the country to ransom. Theres a complete state of insecurity all round with the Maoist menace hovering like a shadow over all walks of life.
Is it the bickering within the cabinet or is it irresponsible statements of maverick politicians? Or is it the total lack of consensus between government and opposition? What is the use of economic growth if such disruption to normal life continues? The conflagrant calls for united action immediately with all resources at the disposal of the state.

Tackling Mamata
*Its no use wasting your time, energy and newsprint advising Mamata Banerjee to take her ministerial duties seriously (Rail rant,IE,May 20). Shell not mend her ways or fall in line, even if the PM were to crack his whip,if he has one. Of late, the government has indeed become a three-ring circus where some ministers strut their stuff even at the cost of governments credibility and collective responsibility. The best way to avoid Mamatas tantrums and theatrics at the Centre is to cajole her into calling it a day to devote herself fully to the 2011 assembly elections in her state. She should be made to feel it a favour and not a punishment. She shouldnt be allowed to have her cake and eat it too,all the time.
