Unequal partners

* I AGREE with what Pratap Bhanu Mehta says in his article ‘By her yardstick’ (IE,June 22). A society’s “maturity” should indeed be judged by how it treats its women. In spite of our culture placing women on a pedestal and our government passing laws to improve their lot, they continue to face discrimination, injustice and inequality. If some women have made it to the top in Indian politics,it is often because of family connections and other special circumstances. Male leaders don’t seem to be keen on being joined by female colleagues. Nothing vouches for this better than the women’s reservation bill, which has been lying in cold storage for a long time.

* ALTHOUGH the BJP has not officially declared Narendra Modi their prime ministerial candidate for 2014,Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was quick to oppose even the idea by questioning his secular credentials (‘Modi as PM: Nitish issues warning, party talks pullout’,IE,June 20). A break-up of the NDA and the formation of a third front could be of great advantage to Nitish Kumar. He could even position himself as a non-Congress,non-BJP prime ministerial candidate. Meanwhile, the NDA is actually doing the UPA a favour by diverting public attention away from the damage the UPA has done with its bad governance.

Prospect 2014

* THIS refers to ‘The resistible rise of Modi’ (IE,June 21). There is a good chance that the Congress will not come to power in 2014. This has led the BJP to hope that the NDA will form the next government. However,Narendra Modi as prime ministerial candidate may not be endorsed by the NDA. A section of India’s middle class may accept Hindutva for the sake of growth but it will not accept authoritarian rule.

Right call?

* THE face-off between the judiciary and the government in Pakistan further destabilises an already chaotic country. The decision of a three-member bench, including the chief justice, could be a case of judicial overreach. The right of the parliament to decide on the disqualification of Yousuf Raza Gilani should have been respected. This does not bode well for a strife-torn nation with a military that is ever ready to step in and take over.

* AITA,in its eagerness to appease Leander Paes, has compromised its position (‘AITA’s give-&-take policy’,IE,June22). The sports body had to bend over backwards to bring a sulking Paes on board, teaming him up with Sania Mirza for mixed doubles.
