The great game

* In ‘The Kabul game’ (IE,May 16),C. Raja Mohan has explained well Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Kayani’s using all his cards to avenge his humiliation at America’s hands over Osama bin Laden’s killing. Instead of walking on eggshells,India needs to rise to its full height and make Afghanistan stand on its own legs, not least militarily. This is a costly proposition but important for our long-term regional interests. We can also hope against hope that every time China may not be ready to play ball with Pakistan at the cost of its own bilateral relations with the US.

Misplaced anger

* This refers to ‘Pasha unplugged’ (IE,May 17). The ISI chief Shuja Pasha’s warning to India against carrying out attacks inside Pakistan is patently misplaced and self-serving. Pasha is venting his frustration over the Abbottabad raid. The spy master’s anger should be directed towards the United States which has warned of a repeat act if needed.

List of errors

* Apropos ‘Recall Bhardwaj’ (IE,May 17),there cannot be a worse mismatch between a state government and a governor than it is in Karnataka. Common sense is not a strong point either with H.R. Bhardwaj or B.S. Yeddyurappa. Why did Bhardwaj refuse to see the MLAs who came to meet him? With such blind loyalists as governors, does the Congress need political enemies? Yeddyurappa’s brazen defence that his corruption and nepotism are not different from those practised by his predecessors is also clumsy. The BJP leadership fears that the Lingayat community,to which BSY belongs, may turn against the party.

* In ‘Recall Bhardwaj’,you have rightly said that Karnataka Governor Hansraj Bhardwaj disregarded “all constitutional propriety”,and demanded his quick recall. It is unfortunate that Bhardwaj interpreted his assignment as furthering of the Congress interests. This is not the first case of a governor promoting the ruling party’s agenda. It is high time the sanctity of constitutional offices is honoured to strengthen democracy.

* This refers to ‘Reading Amma’s mind’ (IE,May 17). If Jayalalithaa doesn’t make the same mistake twice,it will be good for the people of Tamil Nadu. The DMK’s rout shows that one cannot take the electorate for granted. Eradicating corruption and providing quality governance should be Jayalalithaa’s agenda. She must refrain from engaging in a fight with the DMK and allow the law to take its course. This is an opportunity for the AIADMK to rebuild its image.
