Talking heads

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram is right in his assessment of the Kashmir interlocutors (‘Grounding home’,IE,November 3). However, the opposition was quick to seize upon their comments. The team appointed by the Centre was sent on its J&K mission to feel the pulse of the locals. However,it may have backfired because the team didn’t consist of seasoned politicians who could handle the camera on sensitive issues. The team should have reported the outcome to the home ministry which would then

do the talking, instead of embarrassing the government.

UPA adrift

Recent scams that have hit the government are a sad reflection on what might have been. UPA-II came to power with a feeling of change. The Left was no longer curtailing the government; nothing should have prevented the reforms meant to help India realise its potential. Yet,a

year-and-a-half later, the only thing going beyond its potential is inflation. The nuke deal seems dead, unless the government now signs contracts against the spirit of the liability bill. While the right to education expands fundamental rights,it’s not a cause for celebration in itself. A decision on Kashmir was delayed so long that serious damage may have been done. Now,as far as the CWG and Adarsh housing scams go,the political brass is doing what it’s done so often. When public anger reaches the boiling point,an official will be replaced. And that will be it.

Place the bid

The lack of forethought is reflected on the part of sports administrators (‘Bring the Games’,IE November 2).

During the Commonwealth Games,an extraordinary enthusiasm was generated among our youth towards sport. This tempo should not only be maintained but must also be given a fillip. The interest of budding young sportspersons should be respected by providing them more international exposure. Now the infrastructure is available, which makes our bid for the Asiad strong. We should submit our bid and strongly pursue our goal of winning it.

Harming itself

By resorting to populist protests, the BJP has done a great disservice to its very goal of providing an alternative to the Congress (‘Ways of arguing’,IE,November 2). It’s time for introspection for the BJP. Parties lose public respect when they oppose the very things they had themselves endorsed when in power. The BJP has consistently downgraded its image. By giving more publicity to Arundhati Roy’s views on Kashmir than deserved, the party is not only acting immaturely but giving undue coverage to the separatists’ cause. Also,if the government had overreacted and pressed sedition charges,it would have abetted her desire for even more publicity.
